Build Musique from source

Compile the open source Musique desktop client on your own computer. The app uses Rust and Tauri for its backend, with a React and TypeScript frontend.

What you need

  • Git to clone the repository.
  • The Rust toolchain and Node.js.
  • pnpm v11, as specified in the project README.
  • Tauri's platform dependencies for your operating system.
  • On Linux, libasound2-dev in addition to the Tauri dependencies.

Follow the official Tauri prerequisites for macOS, Windows or Linux. The Musique README is the source for current project-specific requirements.

Clone, install and run

Run these commands in a terminal after installing the prerequisites:

git clone https://github.com/CodingBoyBlah/Musique.git
cd Musique
pnpm install
pnpm tauri dev

The final command starts the desktop app in development mode. These instructions do not create a packaged release installer.

Spotify login and credentials

The project README says login works out of the box. To use your own Spotify app credentials, copy the repository's .env.example to .env and fill in its fields, or configure them in Settings. Keep the values private.

Musique stores tokens and the client secret in Windows Credential Manager, macOS Keychain or Linux Secret Service. It is an unofficial client and its reverse-engineered protocol is against Spotify's Terms of Service.

Troubleshooting a source build

Check the first error in the terminal, your installed toolchain versions and the Tauri prerequisites for your operating system. Linux audio build failures may indicate missing libasound2-dev.

Search GitHub issues with the error message and include your operating system and toolchain versions when reporting a problem.

To install a prebuilt release instead, use the Musique download guides.
