Musique FAQ
What is Musique?
Musique is a free, open source, unofficial Spotify desktop client for macOS, Windows and Linux. It combines your Spotify library with synced lyrics, native window effects, podcasts and Spotify Connect. It is built with Rust, Tauri and React.
Is Musique free?
Yes. Musique is free and open source under the MIT license, with no ads. A Spotify account is required, and the playback source depends on whether you have Spotify Premium.
Do I need Spotify Premium?
Spotify Premium accounts stream directly through a patched librespot core. Free accounts play through YouTube Music instead, while library and track metadata come from Spotify. Musique does not give a free account Spotify Premium streaming.
Is Musique an official Spotify app?
No. Musique is unofficial and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Spotify. It uses the reverse-engineered librespot protocol, which is against Spotify's Terms of Service. The project is provided as-is for educational purposes. Use it at your own risk.
Where does my Spotify login go?
Tokens and the client secret stay in your operating system keyring: Windows Credential Manager, macOS Keychain or Secret Service on Linux. The desktop app does not send these credentials to its frontend interface.
Which platforms does Musique support?
Musique supports macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, Windows and Linux. Official GitHub releases include macOS DMG files, Windows EXE and MSI installers, and Linux AppImage, DEB and RPM packages. The app supports automatic updates from GitHub releases.
Choose your platform and read the installation guideDoes Musique have synced lyrics?
Yes. Musique supports line and word-by-word synced lyrics, with romanization for Japanese and Chinese. It searches multiple lyric providers, including LRCLIB, Apple Music, Musixmatch and Spotify. Availability and timing depend on the track and provider.
Does Musique download songs for offline playback?
The documented offline cache stores library data such as playlists, saved tracks and new releases in a local SQLite database. It is not a promise of offline audio downloads or playback.
Can I build Musique from source?
Yes. Install the Rust toolchain, Node.js, pnpm v11 and the Tauri platform dependencies, then clone the Musique repository, run pnpm install and run pnpm tauri dev. Linux also needs libasound2-dev. See the repository for current build requirements.
